On January 16, 2012 Sheraton Eatontown Hotel was announced as Official Hotel of The New Jersey Marathon. Entering into the 16th year, The New Jersey Marathon is one of the first major events to kick off summer at the Jersey Shore. The race could potentially have 12,500 runners and bring over 20,000 people into the area for the weekend of May 4-6, 2012.
Joe Gigas, Executive Race Director for The New Jersey Marathon, Samantha Johnson, Director of Sales and Marketing, Barb Youchah, Corporate Sales & Internet Marketing Manager and Salvatore Giorgio, Sales Manager all with Sheraton Eatontown Hotel met several times over the month of January to work out the details of the partnership. Coming to an agreement was easy, it was a natural fit. With 208 guest rooms and 18 meeting rooms, Sheraton Eatontown is one of a few area hotels with enough space to handle the multiple needs of pulling off such an event.
In past years, both Samantha and Barb have worked with Ted Friedli at Excel Travel at their previous properties when Excel Travel was the official travel agent of the marathon. Ted was instrumental in getting Barb and Joe together for an initial meeting on running in a New Jersey Marathon event to raise funds for Kick Cancer Overboard. The appointment of Official Hotel is especially rewarding for us as Samantha, Barb and Salvatore along with Diane Darcy Schmidt, Senior Sales Manager will be running in support of Kick Cancer Overboard.
Kick Cancer Overboard is a non-profit started by Ted Friedli at Excel Travel in 2010 with the sole mission to send cancer survivors, caretakers and friends on a cruise to Bermuda to celebrate life. By raising a minimum of $888 each, the runners will be able to send a cancer survivor or caretaker on the cruise. It is rare to have the opportunity to raise funds and be able to see them go directly to the person they were raised for.
The starting line for 2012 has been moved from Ocean Place to Monmouth Park in Oceanport for all three races including the full 26.2 marathon, 13.1 Long Branch Half Marathon and Half Marathon Relay. The races will still conclude on the Long Branch Promenade. Sheraton Eatontown is the ideal hotel for getting to the starting line without the hassle of traffic.
There is a room block set aside for runners and we are in the midst of planning several marathon related events. Come back for updated information on our progress.
