American Red Cross Biomedical Services plays a critical role in our nation’s health care system. It is the largest single supplier of blood and blood products in the United States, collecting and processing more than 40 percent of the blood supply and distributing it to some 3,000 hospitals and transfusion centers nationwide. The Red Cross also plays a leading role in protecting the safety of donors and patients and increasing the availability of blood. It has been among the first to help develop and implement testing for infectious diseases and is frequently the single major contributor to clinical trials to improve blood safety. Providing life-saving blood and blood products to patients is a key component of the Red Cross mission to help people in times of emergency and disasters.  It is the Penn-Jersey Blood Services Region that is responsible for the collection and distribution of blood products throughout the entire state of New Jersey and the Southeastern Pennsylvania area.

In addition to supporting the American Red Cross through our Festival of Trees, Sheraton Eatontown is hosting a blood drive this Wednesday, November 9, 2011 from 10:00am to 4:00pm. We are working hard to secure as many donors as possible and hope that you can help. Appointments are available on-line here: http://www.membersforlife.org/pennj/schedule/login.php?sponsorcode=9533

Our HR Director, Mary Mueller had the assist and emailed me this link warning “It’s a tear jerker.” and she’s not kidding. Please watch and the words at the end are so powerful:

The need is constant, the gratification is instant. Give Blood.

In addition to the Biomedical Services, the American Red Cross has been the nation’s premier emergency response organization. As part of a worldwide movement that offers neutral humanitarian care to the victims of war, the American Red Cross distinguishes itself by also aiding victims of devastating natural disasters. Over the years, the organization has expanded its services, always with the aim of preventing and relieving suffering. In addition to domestic disaster relief and biomedical services, the American Red Cross offers compassionate services in other areas: community services that help the needy; support and comfort for military members and their families, educational programs that promote health and safety; and international relief and development programs.

I attended a Freehold Network For Success Group networking event this evening that was hosted by the American Red Cross Jersey Coast Chapter in Tinton Falls, NJ. Attendees were asked to bring toys for children ages 0-12 to be donated to boys and girls in need of a little joy in their lives at the holidays. Little did we know there would be an incredible group of high school volunteers who not only helped with the event but also shared stories of how giving has brought happiness to their lives. It was amazing to see.
